It was built from 1508 to 1511 by the young Baldassarre Peruzzi for the rich Sienese banker Agostino Chigi, the great patron and a leading figure in the early sixteenth century Rome, who had amassed a large fortune by the sale of alum Tolfa and enjoyed the protection Pope Leo X. This scheme allows a close link between the garden and the villa, call Vitruvian models and architectural patterns present in the work of Francesco di Giorgio Martini and sometimes early in the Villa near Siena. The lodge served as a stage for festivals and theatrical performances organized by the owner. The Italian garden which supplemented the villa has been much altered over time.
